Boost your CAD skills: 5 reasons to follow TooTallToby

Are you looking to better your CAD level?

Do you still struggle on simple lofts after all those endless and seemingly useless 3D CAD courses at college ? Or maybe Sheet Metal toolbox brings you horror memories?

It’s time to harden up your CAD game and follow TooTallToby on all his channels! Here are 5 reasons why should do it:

1) He is a Certified SolidWorks Expert & Certified Solidworks Instructor

Through his almost 30 years fiddling with 3D CAD, he became a recognised expert, being certified CSWE and CSWI. His Step-by-Step YouTube tutorials on his Youtube channel are really helpful to progress in CAD design and be able to reach CSWP and CSWE level if you use SolidWorks, or get equivalent certification on other CAD software. He adds roughly 2 productivity or life hacks tutorials on SolidWorks per month that will level up your game.

2) His practice models are goldmine

There are 20+ free practice models on TooTallToby.com that are top notch to perfect your CAD skills. The goal is to draw the part on your favorite CAD software and input the mass of the part to check you modelled accordingly to the 2D drawings provided. The difficulty of the parts are ranked on 7 tiers of complexity, tiers 1 being the easiest and tiers 7 the hardest. These models are of insane value to become a faster 3D designer.

While you draw, a timer is running: a community leaderboard enables you to compare yourself in terms of number of practice models completed and speed of completion. And if you’re craving for a CADathon, you can pay 10$ for a month and try to speedrun every premium members-reserved models. There are at least 70 of them! Why not try other CAD software too to check if there is a better one out there?

3) He organizes weekly SpeedCAD contests

If you want to test you CAD skills, Too Tall Toby runs the Model Monday Live. On every Monday 1pm EST (7 pm CET) he challenges the community to solve 2 or 3 challenges live, that is finding the mass of the part as fast as possible. And if you can’t find the solution, the correction immediately follows the challenge, on live.

4) He stages the World Championship of 3D CAD Speedmodeling

Have you ever dreamed of 3D CAD becoming an e-sport? If so, welcome home! Every year, 32 people take part in a bracket tournament to become the world fastest CAD designer. Every match opposes 2 players for 3 battles: the first to win 2 battles progress to the next round until final victory. The contenders livestream their screens while CADing so viewers can see how they think and learn from their speed. It’s software agnostic: in 2024, RamBros won with Fusion360 while in 2023 Victor K won with SolidWorks. Oh, and the 2024 Spring Session champion was an OnShape user. So it’s only up to your skill and mastery of your CAD software.

5) He runs the Discord server where all CAD designers should be

TooTallToby discord server is the place where you can reach TooTallToby and some CAD champions, that are all eager to help if you struggle with a practice model or a model from the Monday Lives. Basically, it’s a must-join for everyone wanting to become a better CAD designer.
